MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion Adamson needed just five innings to trample Ateneo, 9-0, and inch closer to sweeping the double round elims of the 74th UAAP softball tournament Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The duo of Rizza Bernardino and Julie Marie Muyco stood tall on the mound once again while first baseman Michelle Lentija provided the offensive spark by keying a four-run second inning with a two-run homer.
The abbreviated win – due to mercy rule – was the seventh straight for Adamson.
Bernardino struck out three batters in three innings before Muyco fanned five of the six Ateneo batters she faced in the last two frames as Adamson extended its winning run to 17 dating back last year.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines escaped past University of Santo Tomas, 8-6, in nine innings to remain in second place at 6-1.
The Lady Maroons were on the verge of losing the game when they trailed 5-3 in the top of the seventh frame but Julian Tanaka and pinch-hitter Elisa Legarte hit a pair of RBI singles to force an extra innings.
